Teen-Led Trends in Fandom Activities: Insights from Fan Research

Booklista Corporation (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Official Website) has announced the results of its latest survey conducted for users with favorite characters, who engage in “Oshi-Ken,” a fan activity research group they manage. This survey was carried out on the Oshi-Katsu App Oshibana provided by Booklista.

The Heart of Fan Activities Lies in the Teens—Main Genres are Anime and Games

This survey targeted 571 Oshi-Katsu users nationwide, with results showing that the majority are in their teens. Regarding the genres of their favorites, anime dominated at 54.5%, games at 50.1%, and manga at 39.1%, illustrating that “2D content” is mainstream; however, video content like VTubers and game streamers also show significant popularity. This is because the sense of real-time interaction and approachability is widely supported.

How Open is the Fan Activity?—About 40% Don’t Reveal Details

While many are relatively open about the existence of their favorites, about 41.0% do not disclose the specifics of their fan activities. The survey revealed a certain number of cautious individuals who, even if they proclaim their favorites, do not delve into deeper discussions.

The Psychology Behind Revealing and Concealing

Positive reasons cited for disclosing one’s favorites include “Wanting to bond with friends” and “Hiding is bothersome,” while reasons for concealing include “Fear of being teased” and “Same-fan rejection,” highlighting defensive emotions. Notably, some suffer from trauma related to teasing, showing that personal past experiences greatly influence the openness in fan activities.

Impressions and Outlook

The survey highlighted the diverse values of fan activity users and the decision-making process regarding openness. Despite an era where it’s easier to talk about one’s favorites, many still face conflicts. Booklista’s Oshi-Katsu App Oshibana continues to provide a platform catering to these needs, allowing for more diverse enjoyment methods. There is great anticipation for what kind of evolution they will undergo next.
